Mass Gatherings (1967-1969)

New York City was an exciting place to come of age in the 1960’s. Protests were erupting for civil rights, women's liberation, and to end the war in Vietnam. Rock music was speaking to disenchanted youths no longer wanting to follow in their parents cookie-cutter path. Change and upheaval were everywhere and NYC was one of the epicenters of this cultural revolution.

I remember leaving our upper westside Manhattan apartment with protest posters and camera in hand. My friends and I would walk east and join the huge crowds to protest the war in Vietnam and to attend the counter culture Central Park Be-Ins. The idea of the Be-Ins being that people should join together to raise their individual and collective consciousness, and to do anything possible to rise up against the establishment.

It took me twenty seven years, but beginning with my Peace Walk series in 1985, I began once again to photograph protests, demonstrations, marches, and other events dedicated to making positive change in the world.
