Boston and the East Coast (1987-2005)

Living in Los Angeles was beginning to play itself out for me. I was getting tired of the constant sunshine, I missed the change of seasons, and I needed to take the next step in my professional photography career. My mother was in the middle of a long illness back in New York, and I felt it important to be closer to both her and to my father, who certainly wasn't getting any younger himself. After five years in California I packed up a rented U-haul, hitched my Plymouth Valiant to the back of it, and drove across the country to begin my new life in Boston Massachusetts.

After settling into my new town, I threw myself headfirst into looking for freelance assignments, and I was hired to teach part time at a number of colleges and universities. To my surprise things were professionally starting to come together for me, and after a while I was actually beginning to make a semi-decent living between teaching photography and shooting photographs.

I started going out with Kathy Brown, and after about six months we moved in together. We rented an apartment on the first floor of a house in Watertown where I turned one of the two bedrooms into a dry darkroom, and to Kathy's continued chagrin, used our kitchen sink to mix chemicals and to develop film.

Because of the energy I was putting into making a living, I put on hold working on any in-depth, time consuming personal photo projects, but as usual I continued to carry my camera and photographed daily, concentrating my lens primarily on close friends and family. It wasn't until 2005, after making the switch from film to digital, that I once again began working on longterm projects.
